This is a fabulous success story from Glen and Joann:
We always knew that the debt was bad, but we figured that since we were able to make the payments, it was okay. I remember my husband talking about Dave Ramsey, a guy on the radio, and his Total Money Makeover plan. When Glenn told me that he wanted us to try the plan; I wanted to laugh because Glenn lives to spend money. "Bigger, better, faster" was his motto. And we had the bills to prove it.
Well, I figured I could survive trying the plan. Before I knew it, we were having the time of our lives. We found ourselves looking forward to working on the plan. In about 13 weeks, we had dumped $40,000 worth of debt! Two years later, we were debt-free except for the mortgage.
We Never Lost Hope
It wasn't long after that when tragedy struck our home. Glenn was diagnosed with a massive tumor, which was so large that the doctors didn't hold much hope. They sent him home and gave him a grave outlook of 6 months to live and predicted a slow, agonizing death. The doctors may have given up hope, but his family and I never lost our faith.
With no money coming in, I was unable to make our mortgage payment. I contacted the bank and told them of our situation. Foreclosure on the house was inevitable, and the outlook was bleak. Three long surgeries, 6 hospitals, and countless doctors later, Glenn was on the road to recovery. It wasn't long after Glenn's surgeries that we started receiving his disability checks. Now that Glenn was doing better, I started agonizing over the bills that were sure to arrive and how much I would still owe on the house after foreclosure. Bankruptcy seemed inevitable.
We Did It!
Two years have gone by, and our credit rating may have been damaged, but we did not declare bankruptcy. It's funny, but a credit rating isn't very important after you choose to stop borrowing money! The bank bought back the house for what we owed. We kept up with the ever-challenging doctors' bills and have managed to continue applying The Total Money Makeover principles. We now have a net worth of just under $80,000!
Things may seem overwhelming with no hope in sight, but learning to avoid bankruptcy through Dave's baby steps is a must-do!
